Puerto del Rosario
Puerto del Rosario (Port of the
Rosary) has been the capital of Fuerteventura only
since 1860 when it was known as Puerto de Cabras
(Port of Goats) - the name was changed in 1956 to
make it more appealing! The original capital of the
island was Betancuria but the capital was changed to
Antigua for a whole year in 1959 before finally
being transferred to Puerto del Rosario.
Puerto del Rosario is a working port
and, as such, it has had little time to develop any
tourism interests. However, it is an interesting
city/town to stroll around on a Sunday when the
roads are quiet. There are numerous sculptures
dotted around on roundabouts, street corners and
along the 'promenade'. Many of these sculptures are
the result of a sculpturing contest held each year
during the town's fiesta in September where a dozen
or so sculptors from around the world, pit their
skill against each other in public (a car park on
the 'prom' near the harbour). It is fascinating to
watch these artists at work with both power and hand
tools creating imaginative art from huge rocks.
You can see some examples of the
sculptures above along with a few other interesting
features of the town.
As with many other areas of
Fuerteventura, there are plans to develop Puerto del
Rosario into a more vibrant city with more
attractions for residents as well as tourists.
